This is a little comic strip idea I had in my head that I wanted to get down onto paper. I kind of want to do more than my usual doodles and sketches, but never felt I was "good enough"... which is stupidly circular, I realized, as I'll never be "good enough" if I never actually do anything.
Like my fiction writing, this is more of an experiment, to learn-by-doing and being okay with making mistakes. I made up some purposely simple characters, trying not to get overly-ambitious on the first go around. I already see some issues I can try to smooth out next time.
Another little comic, experimenting with a couple things. The characters are a more dynamic. I may have to give them eyebrows, just to give me more options when showing emotion. I drew the panel borders and cleaned the gutters in the computer rather than by hand, which meant I didn't have to worry about staying "in the lines" so much.
Still trying the hand lettering. Went more free-form with them, seeing if I prefer the loose feel. Still not happy with them, especially how hard they are to read when I scale the picture down. Will keep trying, but I reserve the right to switch to computer lettering in the future.
The third in the "series" and I'm getting a little more comfortable with the inking. My lines were smoother, which prevents those little bunched up gobs that were in the previous two strips. Also, my hand lettering turned out much better this time around. I made sure to keep the letters wide and spaced apart this time. I'm going to pick up a brush pen sometime this week, so we'll see this improvement translates into some interesting lines with it.
It only took me a couple strips to realize that the two characters had too simple a design. There just wasn't enough in them to emote, especially the dog. No guarantee they'll remain in this current form. They may continue to evolve, based on whim and results. But at least I have more work with now.
