The Honesty Of The Sketchbook

Salvador Dali called drawing the "honesty of the art", saying that there was "no possibility of cheating, it is either good or bad." It was a hell of a sentiment to keep in mind when I took my sketchbook to the Winnipeg Art Gallery this fall. The gallery was hosting "Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery" and "Dalí Up Close", a pair of fantastic exhibits featuring classic and surrealist works.

Like previous outings, I found my pen draw to the details of the art. For a lot of Dali's work in particular, you risked missing out on the whole if you didn't focus on the individual pieces. If you haven't had a chance to see his work, I highly recommend you do so, and really get in close to it. Its incredible stuff!

As for my own sketches... well, at least they're honest :)
